I seem to remember that now as well! That's exactly what happened to mine
except the horn did not go off at all. Unfortunately for me, I did not
realize at the time that there was a quick disconnect in the wire leading to
the ring and ended up taking the wheel out to gain enough access to the wire
end to repair it. I also remember having to change the horn relay once
because it too had shorted out internally.
My old car was a wiring disaster as I had purchased it second hand and the
previous owner had taken some liberties and thought he could rewire select
systems. He actually ended up making it worse than Lucas had originally
designed it!
