I just used a hammer "gently" and it popped out.
It was not in good shape.

Yup, but it's very tight by design.  You either remove using an
extractor or a "pickle fork" (which is kind of like a wedge that you
hammer in between the A arm and the balljoint.)  The pickle fork
normally destroys the balljoint boot, but that's ok since you're
replacing it anyway.

Sometimes you can give a couple of raps on the vertical link to
loosen up the balljoint and then hammer the balljoint upwards and
out.  You really should put the nut back on to protect the threads
from mushrooming.
