I've found a solution - I just don't use a gasket! I do the down-pipe up
nice and tight against the manifold. There is no noticeable exhaust leak,
and no audible difference to when the gasket is in place. It's been like
that for a couple of years now (after I, too, got fed up with frequent
gasket replacements), with no problem at all.
