When greasing the rear bearings, I recommend doing it with the brake
drums off. Then you can carefully wipe away any grease that
gets past the outer seal. Otherwise, it may get onto your brakes.
I do this once a year, and naturally I take the opportunity
to check the rear brake linings for wear, and the cylinder for leakage.
There is a little drain hole in the backing plate, just
below the axle shaft, that is theoretically supposed to allow
any grease that gets past the outer seal to drain away. If you
clean the gunk out of it with little pointy stick, it might
even work :-)
