Without getting too technical, and without taking the diff
to a specialist shop can anyone advise on the feasability
and practicability of the following:

My Driveshaft front U joint went causing bad vibration in
the drive shaft. Now the front pinion seal in the diff
leaks badly, and I believe I can move the pinion a tiny
amount side to side. Is it possible that the drive shaft
imbalance caused the pinion bearings to go>

If they bearing is gone:
Can the front pinion bearing be replaced by taking the diff
apart (but not the spiders and crown wheel assembly). This
is on a MK IV with the spacer washers to give the pinion the
correct preload.

Can I do it myself, with the help of an experienced
mechanic?

Cheers, Fred
