Thanks to all for your responses, I do now remember a thread on the lists
some time ago about these engines, I was just curious to see the difference
in numbers.

The story is that the engine was reconditioned about 10 years ago but only
had about 10-20k miles put on it afterwards then the car was just left in a
field to disintegrate. It was a bit disconcerting to find the thrust
bearings were going on it and even more so when Guy removed the sump plug
and we saw a pint of water come out of it. Even I know enough to be aware
that that was not a good sign.

After further examination though it seemed that the engine was still
basically sound so we took a chance and it's now been completely stripped
down again, and everything checked. Apart from the bearings there really
wasn't anything much wrong with it. Luckily the water level in the sump
wasn't deep enough to do any real damage and hardly anything's worn in it,
we're just doing the replacements now as it seems to make sense to do that
at this stage and help give BB a few more years on the road without major
surgery.

As an aside, for anyone in the south of England looking for Triumph parts
you might want to check out Rachel Allen's place at 2 Chickenhall Lane,
Eastleigh, Hampshire. 023 8064 2265, 07785 991027. She's trying to clear out
everything but there's a heck of a lot there, ok, so some stuff is pretty
far gone but there are two very nice tubs, a GT6 and a Spitfire, several
cars in various stages of dismantling and rust but still with a lot of
useful stuff, as well as several intact cars. NFI, but it's just a shame to
see so much stuff just lying there when there may just be the exact thing
someone on this list is looking for.

Sometimes these were standard which probably shows that at least some of
these spares engine were reworkings of warranty units.
