You neglected to tell us what the noise actually sounds like.
Once upon a time I would sometimes get a horrible-sounding chattering
noise from the rear end when I let off of the gas. I thought my
differential was toast, but it turned out to be a dried-out and seized
strap-style joint on the driveshaft.
