Bob,
I am not all that familiar with the single rail gearbox (don't have any but
have sold a couple of them), so I can't comment on the
front seal or the lack of thrust washer springs on that unit.
However, On the 3-rail gearboxes, I don't think the Spitfire ones ever had
those springs. The GT6 (Mk3) gearbox uses the same case as
the MkIV does, but it has the springs where the MkIV does not.
