That's a very good point.  The theory was, I think, that if the engine is red
hot, it doesn't matter about the spark timing being wrong, because the heat of
the engine will be sufficient to cause the fuel to burn.  But the cam profile
would be wrong, so there would be no way to get any fuel into the engine,
so......

Interesting, but completely useuless, discussion.

it can't be done. running backwards the engine would suck in exhaust gas
compress it and then the plug would fire. the engine if it continues to
spin, the piston would go down releasing the pressure on the exhaust gases
which would do nothing on that stroke and then when the piston goes back up
would squeeze the exhaust gases out the carb.
