The distributor rotor developed a crack. The allowed high voltage
between the secondary side of the coil and the plugs to ground out. The
engine was running very poorly, and then not at all.

The spark was increasingly weak on account of this crack developing in
the rotor. Fiddling with the distributor innards would temporarily make
the problem go away, like when I cleaned everything real well.

Finally the car would not run at all. Careful examination revealed a
crack in the plastic from near the brass tip to the base. All them
little electrons just ran down it like a waterslide.

The local major chain parts store had a beefy replacement. Ya, a spit
part at a chain autor parts store!

All is well now.
