That sound that you described is most usually the noise that is heard when
the high pressure blow off is actuated.  Debbie's did that when the radiator
fan died.  It was the first clue that something wasn't right.

In my three-compressor warrantee replacement extravaganza (ended when the
car was totalled three days into the third REPLACEMENT compressor), I
experienced this. It took the compressor two hours to blow the seal, and
when it did, I thought I standing in front of a foghorn that had ingested
helium. Was like listening to a thousand nails being pulled down a
chalkboard. Nearly wet myelf.
