I've used crushed granite (fine gray gravel) for this on my posts.  In
fact, I only used concrete on the corners and the line posts are just set
in CG.  The upside is that it self-settles around the post and is easy to
top-off.  Note, this is crushed granite, which forms a hard pack versus
composed granite, which makes for soft walking paths.
