I've had plenty of issues with newer grease gun couplers. I used to
unscrew them to make the lock teeth loose, pop the coupler on the zerk, and
then tighten the coupler. I finally bought a "Lock 'n Lube" lever action
coupler. A little large for some tight locations, but overall
satisfactory. Way too expensive, but it works.
