I agree, but they are fairly easy to neutralize.  For acid, use a big box
(or two) of baking soda.  It will chemically react (foam and bubbles) to
form a (relatively) harmless salt and lots of CO2.  Keep applying until no
more reaction.

For lye, use vinegar.

Both processes do generate some heat, though, so if you have acid or lye on
your skin, it's probably best to flush with water first, then apply the
vinegar or baking soda.

Wear eye protection, clothing protection, etc.
