I built one like that for my wife's horse trailer. I used an old garage
door spring that a pile of "stuff to save because you may need it
someday". I have no idea of the rating of the spring. It was a lot of
trial and error. I ended up with a compound pulley system and attaching
at he midpoint of the ramp. I put the spring in a length of plastic
pipe for protection. It has worked well for many years.
The spring was almost 3" in diameter and about 2' long.
