I had the same thing happen on a '72 ford van with a C-6 auto. After
flogging it at high speed for 400 miles to meet up with a friend whose
RZ350 and trailer I was going to buy (and using an entire 45 gallon tank
of gas to get there!), the trans was dribbling oil. I'd have stopped
to get it rebuilt but the largest town had two garages neither of which
wanted to touch it. Bought a case of trans oil and drove more carefully
back home, during which the level hardly changed.

It didn't have any problems for the year or so I owned it
after that.
