I'm not a pro either.

That said, usually when this happens to me, I'm not moving fast enough and 
I'm putting too much heat into the surrounding area and the liquid metal 
is flowing back into the cut area.

Or, sometimes, I'm moving too fast, and I'm not getting enough of a cut.

Either way, I'll bet its a travel speed related issue.
