The odd thing about the screws I'm trying to replace is that the pitch of each 
thread is the same as for a normal wood screw, making the double pitch pretty 
fine. But you're right, I am going to try an industrial fastener store in town.

It's called a "double start" or twin start thread.  they are used where 
speed of assembly is more important than the absolute strenght of the 
clamping action.  An industrial supply place may bew a betteer bet.
Incidently, I've got a C clamp that's threaded like this, and it's really 
handy for things where you really want a third hand.  I've no idea where it
came from, though.
