Hi,
I've just signed up to shop-talk and have been watching the goings on with
interest. As you can see from my address I am 'over the pond' but we do
similar things here as well.

As to your query re MIG welders, I currently have a small portable which has
been used extensively for chassis repairs on an early Land Rover. It is a
gas type and I concur with Vic that it gives a clean weld and you can to an
extent control the weld process by a proper choice of gas. However, it's not
very practical if you have to weld outside as the shield gas gets blown away
giving a diabolical weld result. My personal choice would be to get a dual
function machine i.e. gas/gasless. Apparently the polarity is different for
each type so dual machines have the rod and earth leads connected to screw
terminals on the front to facilitate changing from one mode to the other. If
you do get a dual machine, make sure you have the leads connected the right
way otherwise your welds will be awful.

Hope this helps,

Regards,
        John C
