Isopropanol, also known as rubbing alcohol, available in most drug stores,
and most supermarkets in non aerosol form (much cheaper than 16 oz spray
cans).  You can apply it directly, without the overspray problem

Bon-Ami spray can glass cleaner is the only one I've found that gets glass
clean enough for Rain-X to work really well . . . It's hard to find in my
neck of the woods, try hardware stores and builders supply rather than
grocery stores.   Contains no ammonia, the label indicates "Isopropanol"
whatever in 'ell kind of alcohol that is....
It's safe on vinyl and plastic too, in case you get sloppy on the interior.
