A friend of mine built exactly such a compressor several years ago. It used
an opposed air cooled engine, not an inline water cooled engine. He mounted
it on a trailer and it worked well until it wore out (he used it daily). As
I recall, it made about 40 CFM. It ran a fair sized sandblaster with no
problems. His business outgrew the compressor and he replaced it with a
commercial unit.

He mounted it on an old transmission with the VW starter, etc. He also had
to have a gas tank, fuel pump, battery, switch, etc. I used it several
times and was pleased with it, but it did use a fair amount of gas.
