I can't say I have any experience doing this, but I think that as long as
whatever is being plated is completely covered, it should work.  It might
also help to have something to keep the solution moving (some kind of
agitation).  The amperage of the power supply should only affect the rate at
which metal is being plated. (This could affect the finish, but as I say, I
have never tried to plate anything.)
If chrome plating, I believe it has to have copper plated on whatever is it
first (not directly onto iron)
