Bear in mind that most abrasive cutoff saws have a toothed belt between the
motor shaft and the arbor on which the blade is mounted. This belt absorbs much
of the vibration of the cutting process, sparing the motor and its bearings. If
you use an abrasive blade on your radial arm saw only occasionally, you probably
won't shorten the motor life appreciably, but I cross my fingers for people who
use a radial arm for nothing but metal cutting. The annoyance of getting oily
metal filings in your fine woodworking projects is another facet of this
practice.
