It's possible the gear-selector dog is jammed in the gearbox.
This is a trivial matter to fix **IF** you can get to the cover on the top of
the gearbox.
It just comes off, and you can see the end of the shaft from the gearlever, and
the
gear selector gates, and it's pretty obvious how to put it right.

Unfortunatly, to get to the top of the %@&!% thing you have three options:
1) remove the floor from the car (this assumes it's a standard saloon). You
will have to remove seats, carpets, heater, and forty-leven big panhead bolts
from
the edge of the floor, most of which are rusted into the captive nuts on the
body.
Ick. I did this. Not recommended.
2) drop the gearbox. Be sure to get new rubber mounts, and take the
opportunity to
rebuild the brake servo and the oil pump for the rear dampers.
3) cut a hole in the floor for access to the gearbox cover. I'm told that this
is not an unusual thing to find, and if it's done nicely (i.e. smooth cut,
custom
panel to cover it with dzus fasteners or rivnuts or something nice) it's not
really
a problem, even with judging, and it's all covered by the carpet.
