The "new" steering box that I put into my '57 GMC 1/2 ton last year had
a seal on the end of the sector shaft that the pitman arm mounted to.
It was sort of a thin metal enclosure that held a felt seal that I guess
could be referred to as "packing". I replaced the whole thing with GM
part number 7801626. It hasn't leaked a drop since on my daily driver.
Description of the part in the GMC Master Parts Book is:
16.0780 Retainer - Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Gasket
part # 262156 used on all 1/2-1 tone pickups.
1.411" OD x 1 3/16" ID x 1/4" thick
Picture in the book looks like it is packed with felt to me.

Nate - sorry I didn't see this earlier. My seal on my 53 GMC 1/2 ton was
Federal Mogul #313842. I just took the original packing in and the
counter guy matched it with the seal. I usually write down the
dimensions but didn't in this case. Also I haven't installed any lube
yet, so I don't know how it will work. Seemed right at installation.

I also found the original GM part # , it's the same seal for '47 ~ '70
manual steering boxes in 1/2 ton pickups so they had it in stock .

BTW : this fits from 193? to 1970 + so you might want to keep a note of
it , pencil it in the margin of your shop manual , this is the very best
quality seal you can get so i'd buy one NOW whilst GM still makes it .

By the way, list member Nate was right on the money about the sector
shaft seal. It is still available from GM as part number 7801626 at
about $14 a pop. There were only 2 dealers in Texas that had one on the
shelf. Federal-Mogul (National Seal) part # 313842 was available in the
local warehouse for my FLAPS, was delivered that afternoon and cost
$6.49. This is a "rubber" seal, not like the felt seal I removed from
the steering box. The GM part is also a "rubber" seal.
