On a 59 truck I worked on for a friend years ago, I took out the
ammeter, and made a relacement "idiot light" for it...just a flat plate
of sheet metal with a hole in it to fit where the ammeter had been, with
a light bulb socket, and the paper tube from another cluster (as used on
turn signal lamps), and a red plastic lens swiped from a gage cluster
from some car. The light is wired to the alternator wire that normally
goes to the idiot light.
What, no gage at all for the electrical system? Actually, it's not a
big deal, because the idiot light is very good about telling you there's
a problem, in fact it's more noticeable than a gage. I've been running
my 55 Belair (with a blown big block for power) this way since I built
it 7 years and almost 50k miles ago!
