I also keep my truck as close to original as possible. I use my '55 GMC as
a driver and have the original brakes. I find nothing wrong with them as
long as you drive sensibly and maintain them well. This allows original
wheels and hub caps without modifications.
I have changed the ring/pinion to a Patrick's 3:38. This makes a world of
difference. It is not the cheapest way you can go but it maintains the
originality of the rear end. Don't forget to update the speedometer gear at
the tranny for a correct reading.
