I believe this is not a true statement. When I did research for my multi
piece rim article in This Old Truck magazine, I spoke to a wheel
manufacturer. He said none of the GM rims went obsolete for safety reasons.
The move away from multi piece rims was actually driven by tubeles tires
which are lighter and easier to mount, and get better mileage, and don't have
friction with a tube. I can dig up my notes for documentation.
