You are doing part hydraulic part mechanical adjustment.  If hydraulic 
lifters adjust with engine running.  To start engine loosen up adjusters back 
to where you started.  Loosen one slowly till you get a clatter, tighten to 
no sound, then tighten half turn further.  Make sure engine smooths out 
before going to the next valve.
