Well, I checked with Pontiac re the sending unit/pickup tube assembly for
the 81 Sunbird and it is no longer available - discontinued was the word the
parts man used.  But an interesting note came out of the discussion with
him.  The Sunbird was actually the model of the car - Phoenix is the make -
I didn't realize that and didn't even think about it because the junkyard
(guess that terminology dates me, huh?) marked it as a Sunbird.  He said
there were two gas tanks, one for the 4 cylinder and one for the 6 cylinder.
I would assume that the 6 cylinder had the larger tank.  Also, the Phoenix
is the Pontiac equivalent to a Chevy Citation.  So, those are some details
if you're looking for a similar tank and that might make it a little easier
to find one.
