When I had a similar problem it turned out to be a bad battery cable. Make sure
the ground is good (Ground to a starter bolt is best)and cables aren't frayed
inside the shielding, from vibration. Also insure good clean battery posts.

just wondering if anyone could help. my 54 3100 has the 235 and foot
operated starter. yesterday i hit the pedal and it started to turn and
died. then it would either do nothing or the rrrrruuuuhhh and quit. i
thought that it could be a mis-adjusted linkage and used a large screwdriver
to push the linkage into the plunger and still nothing. i was wondering if
it is the starter switch or the motor. any help would be greatly
appreciated.
