David,  The first 2-1/2 ton Chevy trucks were introduced in 1956 and 
are as follows:

8000 series (2-1/2 ton) standard cab 
9000 series (2-1/2 ton) Low Cab Forward (short nose) 
10000 series (2-1/2 ton) standard cab 

1955 and back:

4000 series (1-1/2 ton) standard cab
5000 series (1-1/2 ton) COE
6000 series (2 ton) standard cab
7000 series (2 ton) COE
