MIke, you could try an Jeep/Eagle dealer, they can still get AMC parts. The
parts man will roll his eyes and whine, because they have to look them up on
fiche rather than computer, but if you can find someone who will work with
you, they can at least determine if the studs are still available. I had to
go this route to find Pacer steering rack mounting grommets and bushings.
It sounds like the junkyard is responsible for losing the parts. See if they
can find them on another AMC, and replace them for you...
I don't recommend trying to enlarge the stud size. The upper control arm
cross shaft is a casting that is designed for a specific fastener. You would
seriously compromise it by drilling the holes out to a larger size.
