Eric and all,
The Rabbets in the sides of the boards are to all the metal bed strips to
be recessed so that they just stand proud of the wood. The metal should be
just above the wood surface so that they take the brunt of any wear and
this really saves the wood. Also if you do not have the wood rabbeted the
wood will only be clamped down by the bolts and there is no mechanical lock
between the strips and the wood. Another thing... without the recessing of
the strips it would be very tough to clean out the bed. You would have a
bunch of low areas that would collect everything.
