One thing you can do is to jack the car up , have your sweetie sit in
side and pump the brake pedal while you make the rounds,rolling wheels,
to see what's free and what isn't  If they're all free, it is likely
your master cylinder.  If you have a vacuum booster, you may want to
disconnect it to see how the brakes work (again, with the car up in the
air) unassisted. I had a Peugeot that had a leaky booster once. don't
remember how it felt, but made a hissing noise when the car was running,
as the vacuum sucked in. Maybe others can help you trouble shoot a
vacuum booster. CB
