The answer to the "sameness" one finds in automobile
 design today does not stem from safety rules or drag
 coefficients or even a lack of creativity.

Simply put, today's auto decision makers would be foolish to risk their 
financing, their share price
 and their stock options on originality. The key is
never to give cause to allow a finger to be pointed at
you. Profits are not a priority, personal survival is.

This is not an environment conducive to bonnet belts
and flared wings.
