Oliver,
I believe Abingdon is a town in Oxfordshire, England,
from where our MGs were born. But I could be
hopelessly wrong on this.

The "pillow" refers to the abundance of foam applied
to the dashboard to cushion the driver and passenger's
head in the event of contact. Sort of a pre-cursor to
air bags. I think this was mandated by the US Federal
specifications apparent in the early '70s.

I'm sure other listers will be able to satisfy your
curiosity much better than I have.
