Lessee, you say it push-started reluctantly, then smoothed out and off he went. Sounds like it might have been flooded. Carb(s) might have seeped gas in while it was sitting there during the meeting. He might have been able to start it if he'd held it wide open whilst cranking it. OTOH, if the plugs were wet he might have just run the battery down.
