The actual timing of each cylinder is dependent on the distributor 
cam, under the rotor, unless you have converted to electronic 
ignition. I once had an optronic ignition blade begin to break off, so 
that it started firing the one cylinder way early. It blew the head 
gasket around that cylinder.

Is it possible you have sort of hardened crap on the lobes of the 
distributor cam, causing mistiming?
