Whilst early diode packs were 'open' and individual diodes could be seen and
unsoldered/soldered at one end, the other end was bonded and sealed to the
heat-sink plate and was not generally 'user serviceable', although it would
technically be possibly to cut out the bad diode and solder in one of a
similar rating as a bodge, but heat sinking would be less effective. On
this type the failure of the bonding was what usually caused the failure.
Later diode packs were of the sealed 'solid block' type.
