VIN numbers and Engine numbers

I recently purchased a 1966 MGB GHN3L/89521.  The engine in
the car is 18GB-U-H-42400.  With the title came the VIN tag
for GHN3U/138287 G.  An extra engine came also which is
18GB-U-16141.

My question:

Have the engines on these two cars been swapped.  In other
words, should GHN3L/89521 have engine 18GB-U-16141 and did
138287 originally have engine 42400?
