Condition               Probable cause
Corrective action 
Overflow                Leakage from float, or float bent or damaged.
Replace float.  
                        Dirty needle valve seat.
Clean valve seat.  
                        Loose needle valve.
Retighten.  
                        Defective needle valve seat.
Refit or replace.  
                        Excessive fuel pump pressure.
Repair pump.  
                        Fuel pump drawing in air.
Repair pump. 

BTW, the site gives a good description on SU carbs and how to tune them.
