I guess that a faulty regulator could contribute to the problem, but the coil 
should be able to overcome some low voltage situations that it would cause.  
More frequently when a voltage reg. is bad, the battery won't charge as the 
first symptom.  

If your car is fitted with an electronic ignition, I would consider that it 
may be the cause of the intermittent running.

I agree with the others, clean every contact in the ignition system you can 
find.  The green corrosion is a very effective insulator.  And that is the 
cheapest thing to try.  If the air filter was as bad as you say, there are 
probably bad connections to clean.

My '77 Midget would start one day, and not the next.  There was no spark at 
the plugs on the bad days.  I cleaned everything and it got a little better.  
Then I installed a new Pertronix Ignitor (Thanks Kevin) and it starts every 
time.
