The truth is too strange.  There is a hole in the bottom of that catch pan 
under the grille, on the left side of the car.  That hole leads to a pipe, 
which ends in a bent rubber tube under the car along side the transmission.  
For some reason--still unexplained--this tube ends in a little ball, with a 
slit in the bottom that water is supposed to drip from.  The word supposed is 
critical because, as most of us know, more than water goes through that 
course and the little slit gets clogged by a heavy dusting of pollen.  An 
annual maintenance job is to clear out that tube.  One way is to lay under 
the car with an air hose and blast it out from below, making sure to have 
someone you don't like very much standing by to catch the debris/mud/water as 
it exits the vehicle at high speeds.  Another was is to probe into that tube 
with a long screwdriver, prepared to be drenched with the released muck that 
will come out.  I have never been able to clear the thing from above unless 
it already was nearly clear, in which case a blast of water does a fairly 
good job.  But the bent wire coat hanger from above doesn't seem capable of 
dealing with the bends.  Perhaps a small plumber's snake would be the trick.
Seriously, if you don't keep this clear you will get water backing up into 
the cockpit and severe rust all the way around.
