| My favorite method for immobilising the engine for this project (before I got an electric impact wrench) was the "rope trick"-- pull # 1 spark plug, turn the engine up to nearly the top of the compression stroke (before or after TDC, depending on which way your going), and to feed a length of soft nylon rope into the combustion chamber.
