There are lots of ways of saying it, and lots of folks
might argue over the semantics. Basically:
Oversteer: a condition where the rear tyres have less
adhesion than front
Understeer: a condition where the front tyres have less
adhesion than the rear
Understeer is easier for Joe T. Schmuck to deal with than
oversteer. Joe turns the car left, the car doesn't
turn as far left as Joe would like. Joe's three neurons
think "car not going left. turn more left." Joe turns even
further left and the car more or less does what he wants
it to (to a certain point mind you). Joe could've also
most likely eased off the throttle to get the same result,
but Joe is probably operating a front wheel drive appliance
and therefore has no desire to "clutter" up his mind with
information on how to drive or some such.
Oversteer is that fun thing when the back end comes around
and you've got to turn into the drift to correct the car.
Not only would this terrify Joe, but he'd actually have to
stop and *think*, not something most folks care to do while
in their car.
