Dash Lighting

Listers,
Is it natural to turn the gage lights to max. at night and wish your
flashlight were not in the trunk?  My 78 MGB Has a rheostat that costs
$72.95 Has anyone replaced it with an on-off switch or even checked to
see if the bulbs could handle a full 12 volts? Let me know if anyone
tackled the dim light gages and won.  Thanks in advance
