Interesting but it must have been a slow news day to be reporting on such
shoddy research. Reminds me of a famous story that once appeared in a Boston
newspaper which claimed that priests were causing an increase in the number of
alcoholics in a particular area of the city. You see, the reporter observed
that as more priests came into this area, the number of alcoholics increased
and concluded that it was something the priests were doing. Of course the
reporter, being an English major during college and loathing the sciences -
(who needs it!!!), was probably thinking of some sonnet rather than listening
when his science professor noted that "association (correlation) is a
necessary but insufficient condition to establish causation" (oh, come now -
you don't remember??). Anyway - it turns out that both the increase in
priests and the increase in alcoholics are related to a third factor, an
increase in the population overall. So while the reporter's observations were
correct, his conclusions were not. Moral - Some people kick dogs because they
are mean and some people kick dogs because they bite. Either way, after the
dog bites you, it's doubtful he'll be wondering if human meanness or biting is
related to being kicked!
Ah, enough of this ... I'm still trying to figure out how all those mobile
home parks seem to be causing all those tornadoes I see on the news!!!!

While we're on the subject of colors and what they mean, I picked
this little gem off the radio a few weeks ago. Some study was done,
and they found that people who drive beige cars have less job
satisfaction and are liked less by other. I can only conclude that
the IRS buys only beige company cars! People who drove white cars
were much more contented while people with red cars were liked more.
Just a little additive to our gas tank of discussion...
