To all:
Thanks for the help in getting my 69 egg Beater sorted out. Here's an update
- I got it running!!!
In between my pleas for assistance I took a vacation and have been very busy
at the office and tonight was the first chance I had to skin my knuckles and
grease up my nails. As usual, the problem was relatively simple when all is
said and done. It looks like the timing chain/tensioner is out of sorts.
When #1 is TDC the rotor is pointing about 10 o'clock. When I adjusted the
wires accordingly it pretty much fired right up - of course it runs like crap
but it looks like I've found the problem.
Now what to do? Generally I shy away from engine work because I do not have a
lot of experience. However, I am always eager to learn. If the problem is
with the timing chain or tensioner as I suggest - do you agree? - and is this
a difficult undertaking repairwise? Any help or suggestion will be greatly
appreciated.
Once again, thanks for the input.
Dr. Doug

Subject: RE: Help Wanted, Inquire Within
Dear List,
I readily admit defeat but have not yet given up. My trusty 69 Roadster
Beater will not start and I don't have a clue. I've got spark, coil at 12V,
new points (gaped .015) , plugs (gapped .035) cap and condenser - I've set the
static timing at approximately 10 BTC. I've got the wires set up in the
1-3-4-2 order counter clock wise with #1 plugged in the cap just above the LT
wire. Carbs rebuilt over the winter.
I did have a problem with the 25D distributor which managed to become loose
over the winter. It worked its way out of the pinch collar so that the rotor
cam would move freely (I did turn the engine over a few times before I saw
that the rotor cam was not turning). I put it back in and tightened the pinch
collar (after the static timing fix) which is a pretty straight forward fix so
I don't think this is the problem.
Over the winter (while in the garage) the car became harder and harder to
start and once running ran rough but I figured the dizzy fix and the new bits
would make everything OK. Well, it ain't so and I'm here scratching my head
(and the little hair I have left) wondering what I've missed or am not seeing.
I do not consider myself to be a natural at this stuff so feel free to assume
I'm missing something real simple. I will really appreciate any help as I'm
at a dead end and loathe the thought of towing it to a lbc pro (with my luck
I'll run by a procession of Tr**mphs and M**t*s while the Beaters on the
hook!!!!).
Thanks,
A dumbfounded hick in PA
