Interesting, I had the same problem when I installed my new exhaust
system on my 75 B. As I recall the metal side of the gasket goes
toward
the down pipe. The down pipe has a "flat" flange for it to rest on.
The taper goes toward the manifold.

Does anyone know which way the two sealing rings fit between the exhaust
manifold and downpipe on a '67 MGB? Should the metal side point
toward the exhaust manifold, or away from it? There is a photo
(#46.2) in my Haynes manual on page 92, but I can't tell for sure
which way they fit.
